Semi-permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing in which pigment is placed into the skin to create longer-lasting cosmetic definition. Depending on the service, it may be used for areas such as the eyebrows, lips or eyeliner.
The exact technique, pigment, shape and treatment area should be agreed before the procedure. Although the term “semi-permanent” is commonly used, pigment can remain in the skin for a long time and removal may be difficult.
Healing and colour retention vary between individuals. A qualified provider should review skin condition, allergies, previous cosmetic tattooing and relevant medical history before treatment.
Explore other Skin & Aesthetic treatments in Korea. If you are researching removal of unwanted tattoo pigment, see Tattoo & Mole Removal and confirm the appropriate removal method with a qualified practitioner.
Discuss the desired shape, colour and treatment area beforehand Share allergies, skin conditions and previous cosmetic tattooing Mention any history of keloid or abnormal scarring Tell the provider about medications and relevant medical conditions Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding before treatment Do not stop prescribed medication unless your clinician advises you to
Follow the provider's area-specific aftercare instructions Keep the treated area clean as directed Avoid picking, scratching or removing flakes or scabs Avoid applying unsuitable cosmetics or active skincare to the healing area Protect healed pigment from excessive sun exposure Seek medical advice for worsening redness, swelling, pain or discharge
Semi-permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattooing procedure and should be treated accordingly. Possible complications include infection, allergic reactions, scarring, pigment migration, uneven colour, unwanted colour changes and dissatisfaction with the final shape or appearance. People prone to keloid scarring may have a higher risk of abnormal scar formation. Rare reactions involving tattoo pigment during MRI examinations have also been reported. Pigment can fade over time, but removal or correction may be difficult and complete removal cannot be guaranteed.
